Holiday Driving Tips For Safe Travels

It’s that time of year where everyone has somewhere to be. Traffic becomes congested, commutes become longer, everyone is running between stores for holiday gifts, and of course many have long road trips planned to visit family and friends. Is your car ready for the hustle and bustle of the holiday season? Sloan Ford in Exton has put together a few tips and reminders to make sure your vehicle is ready.

Are Your Tires Ready for Winter and Holiday Shopping?

Traveling between stores and to family members all begins with making sure you have good tires to get you there. If you haven’t checked your tire pressure lately, you will want to do so. As temperatures begin to drop, so does the pressure in your tires. To prevent a flat tire and to make sure your vehicle is gaining the best traction possible, make sure your tires are filled properly. For your vehicle’s correct PSI, check your owners manual.

With inclement weather on the way, you will also want to make sure you have the appropriate tires on your vehicle with proper tread left. If your tires are balding, you will want to get new tires before the snow begins, so your car can grip the road adequately in all conditions. If you live in an area where snow is prevalent and have to drive through many hills and turns, you may want to consider putting snow tires on your vehicle. Make sure you’re ready to tackle the holiday season with properly inflated tires and enough traction to get you through the rain and snow.

Handling Congested Roadways

Everyone is excited to see friends and family they only get to see once or twice a year, but to get there, we all have to share the same roadways. With higher volumes of traffic than usual, it’s important to keep your cool. Remember to keep a safe distance between you and the car in front of you and to always use your turn signals and check blind spots before changing lanes. Your friends and family are excited to see you, so make sure you drive safely and don’t text and drive.

Rain or Snow and You Still Have to Go

Many of us only get to see friends and family once or twice a year. If there’s rain or snow in the forecast, many of us will still trek through the elements to get there. If you’re going to drive in inclement weather this holiday season, make sure your car is ready. In addition to appropriate tires, make sure your windshield wipers are in good condition. Did you know they should be replaced about once a year? Make sure they keep your windshield clear before embarking on a trip in the elements. If it’s raining out, make sure to reduce your speed, and for snow packed roads, your speed should be reduced by half or more. Remember not every vehicle is AWD or handles the same in snow and rain and keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you.
