Ford’s Electrification Plans are Exciting and Totally Green

Ford plans to have a PHEV, hybrid, or all-electric version of all its models in the near future. Also, the company is planning to launch some entirely new nameplates with electric powertrains, and one of these will be a Mustang-inspired crossover that we can expect to arrive by 2020.

Fuel efficiency was always the primary focus of previous electrified models from Ford like the Focus Electric, C-Max PHEV, and Fusion Energy. There was never any talk about raw performance, but now the company is looking towards new models that deliver on both efficiency and performance.

Executive Chairman Bill Ford said the Mustang-inspired electric crossover “is going to go like hell.” He’s referencing the unforgettable speech Henry Ford II gave his team of drivers when the company was attempting to defeat Ferrari at Le Mans in the early 1960s. The Ford GT40 took home the gold then, and we hope the electric Mustang-inspired crossover is a massive win for everyone.

At the recent Crain’s Detroit Business Newsmaker of the Year luncheon, Bill Ford said, “When we first started talking about electrification there was this thought that there had to be a trade-off: it was either going to be green, boring, and no fun, or really exciting but burn a lot of fossil fuels. But now electrification has come to the point that you can do both.”

This exciting crossover is already in the late development stages, but it’s shrouded in mystery. All we know is that it will go for more than 300 miles on a single charge, and it will “go like hell.”
