The Ford Explorer first came to life in 1990, changing the game for SUVs with its family friendly 4-door body and ample cargo space. As the decades have passed, the Explorer has continued to evolve with the times, now finding a market for performance SUVs with the Explorer ST.

“Ford changed the game three decades ago with the civilized, all-purpose utility vehicle refined with easy-to-use electronic 4x4 controls and luxury packages like the Eddie Bauer edition,” said Craig Patterson, Ford SUV marketing manager. “Families flocked to the new platform, leaving their boring minivans behind – and we’re seeing history repeat itself all over again.”

After celebrating 30 years of success, the Ford Explorer maintains the title of America’s best-selling SUV as the 8 millionth Explorer was sold in January. This remarkable feat that no other SUV can claim is due to Ford’s ability to adapt the Explorer to the current needs of consumers. As 18 percent of the Explorer’s current consumers are between 18-35 years old and 46 percent are between 36-55 years old, it’s no surprise that the high performing Explorer ST is such a success, accounting for over 20 percent of the Explorer’s overall sales so far.

“Ford ST stands for performance for enthusiasts, and Explorer ST is no exception,” said Patterson. “We believe once drivers feel the power and refinement of our first-ever Explorer ST, performance bred from racetracks around the world, demand will only grow stronger.”

The Explorer ST features a rear-wheel drive powertrain that boasts 400 horsepower and enhanced performance handling. The 2020 Explorer also received an increase of 600 pounds towing capabilities than previous models when equipped with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine and Trailer Tow Package.

The Explorer ST is only one example of Ford’s continuing innovation. Looking forward to new ideas for the 2021 Explorer model, customers can expect to see an Explorer XLT Sport Appearance Package this summer.

“Our Sport Appearance Package offers a new styling dimension for Explorer XLT customers,” said Patterson. “It has always been a favorite among our younger customers looking for a more energetic design and feel at a great value.”
